Karmic Koala hides Firefox context menuitems icons

This week I’ve received four times the same (i.e. duplicated) ViewSourceWith (VSW) bug report that sounds…

“ViewSourceWith stopped to show the icons on context menu, this regression is present on Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10)”

I use Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10) and all works fine, so I’ve burned a Karmic Koala ISO and tested it discovering the “regression” exists.

Debug -> Add logs -> Remove logs -> Clean Profile -> DOM Inspect -> MozRepl without find where the problem occurs.

Last resort -> Bugzilla -> Found!!!

The Bug 527253 unveils the mystery!

This isn’t a regression

ViewSourceWith isn’t the guilty, Firefox isn’t the guilty but… Gnome is the guilty😛

Type the command shown below from command line and restart Firefox

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons true

EDIT Or use the UI to obtain same result (thanks to mzz) system -> preferences -> appearance -> interface -> show icons in menus

This worked for me and also for two bug submitters (the other two guys do not replayed to my hint)

So remember Bugzilla is your friend😉

  1. I’m pretty sure you can use gnome’s UI to change this too: system -> preferences -> appearance -> interface -> show icons in menus. The gnome release notes ( http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.28/#rnusers.cleanup ) mention this briefly. You will probably see the same thing in other distros using gnome in the future (not just in ubuntu).

    • Thanks for the UI shortcut, I update the post.

Consider not all users, me too😦, read products releases notes not only for gnome

  2. I wonder if there’s anything we GNOME guys can do to communicate such changes better so that you don’t end up chasing non-existing bugs.
    Got any ideas?

    • It’s difficult to eliminate or simply reduce this type of problem, the link posted by mzz it’s very clear about menuitem icons new behaviour but Gnome can’t prevent all implications on other applications, obviously this is true for Gnome and for all other software communities.
The real problem for me consist to be sure these type of informations arrive to the right destination and this is very very difficult to do, something like “Gnome UI modifications and their impact on Firefox”, just my two cents
